NEW TRIPS AND EXPLORATORIES:

Earthquest remains on the cutting edge of adventure travel constantly mitigating intrusion into new wilderness areas with conservation of such. To this end, while we are always scouting for new and interesting programs, we also have concerns for the welfare of the environment we encounter.

Our exploratories are exactly that; we have scouted the basic route, and contacted the local people/authoritories (most of whom don’t have a clue as to what we are doing) and have put together a reasonable itinerary based on that research.

Those who choose exploratories must realize the trip has never been done before. Things can go wrong although we feel we’ve eliminated most of the problems. We offer just a few exploratories per year, and have always had a great group of hardy souls that expect the unexpected.

Having done it “first” and experiencing the thrill of the unknown is something saved for a few. Undoubtedly problems occur, and solving them becomes part of the experience. Exploratories are not for everybody.

“New Trips” are ones that have been explored and are offered as a regular departure although not having been offered before, (may have been run many years prior and now seem new again). These have most all logistics ironed out by previous trial and error, but still are on the cutting edge of adventure.

New Trip • Natural History Cruises in Patagonia

If kayaking isn't your thing, travel in our comfortable 60 foot cutter, deep into the fjords. We then launch motorized inflatable rafts (Zodiacs) for day excursions to take us further yet. These craft are perfect for photography. While they can't go into the ice like our kayaks can, you still get very close. Optional hikes to the glaciers, complete the programs.

We overnight and take meals on board, although lunch is often on shore. The accommodations may seem a bit rustic (bunks, with shared baths) but where this cutter and sport boats take you is well worth the trade off.

Excursions range from 1 day -- along the Straits of Magellan to Cabo Froward (the Southern most point of the continent) to longer trips each with special attractions. Our 5 or 6 day into D'Agostini fjord, or 10 days to Seno Almirantazco feature many calving glaciers, and teeming bird life. We also can get close to Elephant Seals, Gray and Humpback Whales. The dramatic glaciers are unforgettable.

Other 10 day trips include excursion through the Beagle Channel. These narrow fjords are extremely dramatic. Vertical rise to the top of the glaciers from sea level is an awe inspiring 8,000+ feet. Another 10 day trip to Seno Ballena, (Whale Sound) is just that. Some of the best whale watching in the area. There is also a colony of Magellanic Penguins!

We are also offering charter trip to Cabo de Hornos (Cape Horn) the southern most land in the world before the Antarctic continent. Bird diversity is fantastic on this tiny little island. Passage also includes traversing the Beagle Channel and the isolated islands Navarino, Hoste and the Wollaston group. Besides the dramatic scenery, this trip highlights whales, different species of penguins, a variety of albatross, fur seals, sea lions, dolphins and more to the acute observer. There are tremendous stories about passing the Cape.

Prices start a $150 USD per person per day and include all boating and safety gear, experienced crew and fantastic meals! Please ask us for specific dates, or whether you can join an already booked group.

New Trip • Waterfalls Of The Lost World
A true adventure in the Gran Sabana of Venezuela.

In the east of Venezuela lies an unknown and still undiscovered paradise of unique wilderness. With a desire to explore a pristine wilderness we use kayaks to navigate the Karuai River system twisting through Tepuis (table mountains) of Eastern Venezuela, and descending through a series of dramatic waterfalls.

This blackwater river hosts a wide variety of fauna including the Giant Amazon River Otter. Traveled only by local Pemon Indians the Rio Karuai offers a fascinating gateway to the wilderness of Venezuela's Gran Sabana.

Our 2-week expedition offers a unique introduction to the Gran Sabana and its local inhabitants. Bellbirds, Screaming Pihas, Motmots, river otter, Capybara (worlds largest rodent), tapir, plus many kinds of egret, heron, eagles and more.

We descend the Rio Karuai in sea kayaks, quietly navigating this peaceful blackwater river interrupted by majestic waterfalls that we have to portage. Some of these spectacular falls drop over 70 meters.

Our camps are made local style, in hammocks under thatched roof shelters. Our local team of Pemon Indians are attentive to our every need and supply us with local delicacies from fresh pineapple to roasted ants. (Worth a try - they are delicious). The cultural interaction is incredible and perhaps a soon to be lost treasure.

Exploratory• Beagle Channel Sea Kayak Exploratory

At the southern tip of South America lies a truly wild archipelago. It is a dramatic land bordered on the east by the Straits of Magellan and on the west by the wild Pacific Ocean. The Darwin Cordillera rises in a dramatic fashion from deep cut fjords of the ocean up to 4,000-foot summits of glaciers and snow. The tangle of the temperate rainforests quickly gives way to calving glaciers pouring from the summits. Approachable only by sea and best experienced in a sea kayak, the dramatic fjords created by these active tidewater glaciers are home to a wide variety of wildlife.

With a support boat to carry us across dangerous expanses of open water, we are left in intimate and protected channels full of icebergs and wildlife. This is home to a wide variety of sea birds, including petrels, penguins, albatross, and cormorants. It is also home to quite a diversity of marine mammals, and a number of whale species may be sighted. (One of the canals is named Whale Sound).
Crashing through the dense forests we could possibly sight the rare and endangered Huemul. Here exists some of the last habitat for Chile's native deer. This remote area is an adventurer's paradise! Be one of the first paddlers to experience it!

DATES: February 01 - February 12, 2006
Price: $1295 per person (12 days: Overnights on Board)
CHARTER GROUPS AND CUSTOM ITINERARIES FOR THESE DEPARTURES ARE AVAILABLE ON REQUEST. Please check our other Patagonian kayak programs.
New Trip • Wantok River Rafting Papua New Guinea

The Watut River is a forgotten gem waiting to be rediscovered by international rafting enthusiasts looking for a great whitewater adventure. Enjoyed by many in the late ‘70s and the ‘80s, then abandoned, the Watut has only recently been reopened to rafters. It is an exclusive offering of Wantok Rafting. We combine the river with cultural experiences and a small boat cruise along the beautiful tropical coast for a varied look at the fascinating island of New Guinea.

The Watut crashes down from the Kuiper mountains lining the coast near Lae, providing some of the most continuous whitewater rafted anywhere. A moderate volume river dropping at more than 50 feet per mile in its key sections, it is a white-knuckle experience sure to be appreciated by knowledgeable rafters. It flows through rainforest and narrow rock canyons, past villages and the hand-operated sluices of modern-day goldrushers, by screeching cockatoos and parrots. There is plenty of interaction with local people as we visit their villages and they visit our camps.

After the river we set out on a more relaxing but equally spectacular adventure, a four day cruise to Tufi, a fascinating tropical fjord land. On board our 50 foot, fully accommodated motor cruiser, the Njoy, you can kick back with a long frosty one and enjoy the scenery, or snorkel, scuba dive, fish, walk along the shoreline, explore a hidden cove by kayak, or cook a fresh-caught fish on a campfire. Paradise indeed. Nights are spent in full comfort on board the yacht.

The first departure can be combined with a cruise from Tufi to the Trobriands, the world-famous islands of love, where the Polynesian atmosphere, fine crafts, and interesting villages never fail to fascinate.

The second departure includes a day at the annual Morobe Show, where groups from around New Guinea gather to perform their traditional dances and songs. When you picture human decoration, it is probably a New Guinea native dressed for a singsing like this one that comes to mind. Extravagantly painted features, wild hairdos and headdresses, grass skirts, giant shells through noses or ears, and draperies of jewelry adorn the participants. Songs and rhythmic clapping and drumming echo through the air. The atmosphere is electric.
