Patagonia
(Chile & Argentina)
A Land Of Extremes Patagonia
makes up the southern tip of South America including both Chile
and Argentina. It is a unique area where the Atlantic and Pacific
Oceans mix. Eastern wide open pamps collide dramatically with sheer
granite towers and glaciers, while to the west of these jagged mountains,
dense forests cover thousands of mysterious islands and fjords. In
this raw wilderness one is likely to see rare and exotic native fauna
dashing about the rugged coastlines, snowy peaks and wind swept plains.
This
is the domain of the PUMA and CONDOR. Here the native camel, the
GUANACO, grazes, alongside the ostrich-like RHEA. An endangered
deer, the HUEMUL, hides in the thick forests as does the PUDU, the
world's tiniest deer. The oceans teem with whales, sea lions, leopard
and elephant seals. Natualists are amazed at the diversity of unique
bird species, including Albatross, Skua, Penguins, Flightless Steamer
Ducks, Geese, Cormorants, Flamingos and Parakeets.
EARTHQUEST

of our trips focus on the natural history and ethnology of the area.
Our billingual guides are expert naturalists and very informative,
and our staff extremely helpful. Take your pick of a rugged trek,

NATURAL
HISTORY CRUISES IN PATAGONIA
If kayaking isn't your thing, travel in our comfortable 60 foot
cutter, deep into the fjords. We then launch motorized inflatable
rafts (Zodiacs) for day excursions to take us further yet. These
craft are perfect for photography. While they can't go into the
ice like our kayaks can, you still get very close. Optional hikes
to the glaciers, complete the programs.
We overnight and take meals on board, although lunch is often on
shore. The accommodations may seem a bit rustic (bunks, with shared
baths) but where this cutter and sport boats take you is well worth
the trade off.
Excursions range from 1 day -- along the Straits of Magellan to
Cabo Froward (the Southern most point of the continent) to longer
trips each with special attractions. Our 5 or 6 day into D'Agostini
fjord, or 10 days to Seno Almirantazco feature many calving glaciers,
and teeming bird life. We also can get close to Elephant Seals,
Gray and Humpback Whales. The dramatic glaciers are unforgettable.
Other 10 day trips include excursion through the Beagle Channel.
These narrow fjords are extremely dramatic. Vertical rise to the
top of the glaciers from sea level is an awe inspiring 8,000+ feet.
Another 10 day trip to Seno Ballena, (Whale Sound) is just that.
Some of the best whale watching in the area. There is also a colony
of Magellanic Penguins!
We are also offering charter trip to Cabo de Hornos (Cape Horn)
the southern most land in the world before the Antarctic continent.
Bird diversity is fantastic on this tiny little island. Passage
also includes traversing the Beagle Channel and the isolated islands
Navarino, Hoste and the Wollaston group. Besides the dramatic scenery,
this trip highlights whales, different species of penguins, a variety
of albatross, fur seals, sea lions, dolphins and more to the acute
observer. There are tremendous stories about passing the Cape.
Prices start a $150 USD per person per day and include all
boating and safety gear, experienced crew and fantastic meals! Please
ask us for specific dates, or whether you can join an already booked
group.
