La Gran Sabana
Out of the highlands of eastern Venezuela rise sheer-sided mesas. Eroded remains of an extensive plateau which once covered millions of square miles, these flat-topped mountains, or tepuis, are a naturalist's dream. On their weather beaten summits, isolated millions of years from the surrounding rain forests and savanna's, bizarre flora and fauna have evolved.
Roraima - Angels Falls Expedition (9 days)
This is a combination backpack and dugout canoe float trip. We hike to the summit of Roraima where we set up a comfortable base to explore the dwarf forests and sandstone labyrinths. Our dugout canoes then carry us through the rivers to the base of Angels Falls the highest waterfall in the world. Churun-vena, or Angel's Falls as it was renamed after its "discovery" by bush pilot Jimmy Angel is the world's highest waterfall. With great sandstone cliffs looming overhead and clear tea colored water in the rivers, the rainforest here is particularly enchanting. On a continent laden with natural wonders, Churun-vena stands out as one of the most spectacular.
